If you’re looking for a cute—but easy (like ridiculously easy!)—way to decorate your little one’s nursery, this DIY is for you. Plus, it’s inexpensive and can be done in 30 minutes or less. That’s a win-win-win-win in my book!
Supplies Needed:
- Embroidery hoops (I recommend using a mix of different sizes to achieve the best look. You can find embroidery hoops at stores like Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft, or any sewing store.)
- Cotton fabric (I used several different prints, but you only need a small amount of each fabric, so you can just purchase fat quarters or even samples/swatches from places like Fabric.com work, depending on the size of hoop you’re using. See my favorite places to buy fabric here.)
- Scissors (Use sewing scissors if you have them; if not, use scissors with the sharpest—non-dull—blades you have. Dull blade will make it hard to cut the fabric.)
- Glue gun
The How-To:
Before you cut any fabric, lay your hoops out on a flat surface, like the living room floor, to map out your design. This is the time to determine how to arrange the hoops and make sure it works with the wall space you have in mind. Also pair fabrics with hoops to see how the different prints blend and look all together. Once you’re happy with the design, it’s time to cut the fabric.
Cut down each piece of fabric to just larger than the embroidery hoop in which it will go (so each piece will be cut into a circle). To do this, place the fabric down and then put the hoop on top of it. Cut around the hoop, cutting the circle about an inch or so larger than hoop (this may be larger or smaller, depending on how thick your hoop is).
You need some extra fabric to work with to insert it into the hoop. Once the fabric is locked into place in the hoop, add a few dabs of hot glue on the back side to prevent the raw edges from showing.
That’s it! You can now hang your hoops on the wall, according to the design you mapped out ahead of time. I use small nails to affix the hoops to the wall. You may also be able to use something like Command Strips if you don’t want to use nails.
These embroidery hoops transferred really well from my daughter’s nursery to her “big girl” room, and the different prints added lots of color. This doesn’t have to be just a nursery DIY!
